Tilting Gear

This gear can continue transmitting power to
other gear while tilting on its axis at the
same time. It reduces vibration transfer and
gear failure from an accidental change in
inclination angle between gears and shafts.
Apart from industries, it can be used to
reduce vibration in automobile transmission
system and in ATVs as sprocket to prevent
slipping of power chain on uneven angles
between rear and front shafts.

The prototype was designed in CAD software
and then 3D printed with plastic to evaluate
and visualize the concept.

To make the concept of gear tilting while
transmitting the power, we designed the gear
to slide on a spherical ball (which is
connected to the shaft or something else) to
make it tilt. We made grooves in the ball,
and the gear had keys on the inside, which
make it slide only in grooves and control the
gear movement.
