Planned obsolescence can be used to reduce
unplanned waste.

Although everyday items have a short
functional life, most continue to live in
landfill beyond their use. Taking inspiration
from nature—where an object is created with a
purpose and disappears after this purpose is
fulfilled—FADE explores this concept of
impermanence and applies it to everyday
objects.

FADE proposes to consciously use the theory of
planning for obsolescence when designing short
lived objects. Most products created today are
disposable in life and durable in death.
Planned obsolescence addresses this gap
between the functional life of objects and
their actual life.

Using a food-based composite material and
other bio materials, the system displayed
demonstrates the life cycle of a product
resulting from the paradigm shift brought by
FADE to the way objects are conceived, used
and disposed of.
