FloSTEM has clever and intuitive engineering at its core. It measures a specified quantity of water using volume instead of time, to regulate consumption. An impeller rotates as water flows through, driving a specially designed fixed ratio gearbox that triggers the shut off mechanism when 45L has passed through from a shower and 90L from a hosepipe. An extraordinarily high gear ratio of 262000:1 was required in order to make the device viable. Comprising of over 30 pieces, it had to be made from WRAS approved materials, small enough to fit through a letterbox and low cost.
